Sowore Alleges Secret Plot in Nnamdi Kanu’s Ongoing Trial

Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has raised fresh concerns over the ongoing trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a post shared via his official X handle on Wednesday, Sowore alleged that a secret decision had already been made within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration regarding Kanu’s fate. According to him, the purported plan—described as a high-level political conspiracy—is aimed at securing either a death sentence or life imprisonment for the separatist leader, a verdict he claimed was predetermined long before the conclusion of court proceedings.

Sowore further alleged that Justice James Omotosho, who presides over the case, may conclude the trial by interpreting Kanu’s refusal to open his defence as an admission of guilt, a move he said would conveniently validate a prearranged outcome. He also drew a historical parallel between the anticipated ruling and the 1995 execution of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others under the Abacha regime, describing the moment as a test of Nigeria’s moral conscience.

“The trial of Nnamdi Kanu has ceased to be about justice; it is now a test of conscience for the Nigerian state and its citizens alike,” Sowore wrote, urging the public to remain vigilant and to demand fairness in the judicial process.

Neither the Federal Government nor the court has responded to the allegations as of press time. Kanu, who has been in detention since his re-arrest in 2021, faces multiple charges related to treasonable felony and incitement.
