Sowore Condoles Phyna, Blames Dangote Truck Recklessness for Sister’s Death

Human rights activist and presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has expressed deep condolences to Big Brother Naija winner, Ijeoma Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, following the tragic death of her younger sister, Ruth Otabor.

Ruth, a Polytechnic graduate, reportedly lost her life in an accident involving a truck belonging to the Dangote Group.

In a statement posted on his official X handle, Sowore described the incident as “a sad moment” and condemned what he termed the “cutthroat and irresponsible corporate conduct” of Dangote truck drivers.

“This death was not inevitable; it could have been prevented,” Sowore wrote, stressing that poor driver training, dilapidated roads, and inadequate medical response after the accident contributed to the needless loss.

He further decried the pattern of avoidable deaths caused by heavy-duty vehicles on Nigeria’s highways, lamenting that powerful corporations and elites often evade accountability while ordinary families are left to bear the grief.

“Another young life has been wasted, another family is left grieving,” Sowore said, urging that Ruth’s passing should “strengthen the struggle for justice” in Nigeria’s transportation and health sectors.

Phyna, who rose to national fame after winning Big Brother Naija Season 7, has yet to issue a personal statement, but her family confirmed the tragic loss.
