Sowore Hands Over AAC Chairmanship, Declares Fresh Push For 2027 Presidency

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has stepped down as National Chairman of the African Action Congress, following a leadership reshuffle announced on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

The party confirmed Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman, marking a formal transition in its leadership structure as it positions for the 2027 general elections.

Sowore, who founded the AAC and previously led it into national polls, is stepping aside from administrative duties to concentrate on his 2027 presidential ambition.

He has declared his intention to contest the election, saying his renewed bid is driven by the need for sweeping political and economic reforms in Nigeria.

He argued that successive administrations have failed to address deep structural challenges affecting governance and development.

The activist said his campaign will prioritise accountability, transparency, institutional reform, and what he described as a fundamental restructuring of the country’s political system.

He also called for stronger youth participation in politics ahead of the 2027 elections, describing the poll as a defining moment for Nigeria’s future direction.

Reactions have trailed the development, with supporters praising his consistency on reform advocacy while critics question his electoral strength in a political space dominated by larger parties.
