Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called on the Nigeria Police Force to urgently investigate disturbing allegations of abuse linked to a traditional festival in Ozoro.
In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, Sowore urged the Inspector General of Police to deploy experienced investigators to the community in Isoko North Local Government Area, stressing that the reported incidents require immediate intervention and justice for affected victims.
According to the activist, reports from the area suggest that a so-called traditional rite is being used to justify acts of violence against women, with claims that some individuals are targeting women in public spaces under the guise of cultural practices.
He further alleged that residents, particularly women, have been warned to remain indoors or risk harassment during the period of the festival—raising serious concerns about safety, human rights, and the abuse of cultural norms.
Sowore described the situation as unacceptable, insisting that crimes of such gravity must not be excused under any traditional or cultural pretext.

The allegations have sparked concern among observers and rights advocates, who say the incident highlights the need for stronger protection mechanisms for women, especially in rural communities where harmful practices may go unchecked.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to issue an official response, while calls continue to mount for a thorough investigation and accountability for any confirmed wrongdoing.
The development adds to ongoing national conversations around gender-based violence, cultural accountability, and the role of law enforcement in safeguarding vulnerable populations across Nigeria.
