Super Eagles Face Lesotho in Must-Win World Cup Qualifier

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Crocodiles of Lesotho on Friday at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane, in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

Nigeria, who are third in Group C with 11 points, must win to keep their hopes of qualification alive.

The team’s campaign was revived after FIFA deducted points from South Africa for fielding an ineligible player, reducing the gap between Nigeria and the top two.

Benin Republic currently lead the group with 14 points and a +4 goal difference, followed by South Africa on the same points but with a +2 goal difference.

Rwanda are in fourth place with 11 points and a neutral goal balance.

The Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Lesotho in the reverse fixture played in Uyo on November 16, 2023.

Both teams have met three times since 2019, with Nigeria winning twice and drawing once.

Head coach Éric Chelle, speaking during a press conference on Thursday in Polokwane, said the team is focused on securing maximum points.

“We have to start strong and maintain concentration. Football can be unpredictable, but our goal is clear — we must win,” Chelle said.

Nigeria have recorded two wins, five draws and one defeat in their qualifying campaign, while Lesotho have two wins, three draws and three losses.

The match will kick off at 6:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. Nigeria time). It will be broadcast live on DStv SuperSport, SportyBet TV and AfroSport.

The Super Eagles must win their remaining two matches and hope South Africa drop points in their games against Zimbabwe and Rwanda to stand a chance of qualifying for the World Cup.
