Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Agim has affirmed that judges of the nation’s highest court are not members of secret cults.
Speaking on Friday, the 24th of October, 2025, at the Legacy Dialogue 2.0 in Abuja, organized by the Johnny Again SAN (JASAN) Foundation, Justice Agim emphasized that integrity and a godly conscience are the foundation of the judiciary.
The event, according to reports, was themed “Institutionalization of Mentorship in the Legal Profession: A Strategic Blueprint for Professional Development.”
Reflecting on ethics in the legal field, Justice Agim described as absurd the notion that judges are involved in cult activities. He also expressed concern over what he sees as a decline in character and professional integrity within contemporary legal practice.
“I have a conscience. Otherwise, I should not be going to Holy Trinity Parish or even praying if I don’t have a conscience. God is my protection, my fortress and my refuge. You cannot be evil and expect God to be all of that to you. But whenever I say this, a friend of mine would say, ‘I thought they said you (justices) all belong to cults.’ It is not so. We are ordinary human beings,” he stated.

He added that, in his time as a lawyer, cases were already guided by the law, and one could anticipate the opposing counsel’s arguments. Today, he observed, people approach courtrooms aiming to win rather than to seek justice.
“Poor readership, poor knowledge of law – that’s our problem today. Some lawyers hold judgments in their hands but don’t read them. They go on television to spew ignorance so loudly and with audacity. It is a shame,” he declared.
Justice Agim, who has delivered over 600 judgments, noted that understanding a judge’s reasoning is impossible without studying the judgment itself.
