Supreme Court Set To Rule On Sule Lamido’s Son Over $40,000 Undeclared Cash

The Supreme Court is set to deliver its judgment Friday, January 16, 2026, on the appeal filed by Aminu Sule Lamido, son of former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, over his conviction for failing to declare $40,000 in foreign currency.

The apex court will review Aminu’s challenge to earlier rulings by the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, which previously found him guilty of false declaration and possession of undeclared cash at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.

Aminu was arrested on December 11, 2012, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as he prepared to board a flight to Cairo, Egypt.

While he declared $10,000 to customs officials, authorities discovered an additional $40,000 that was not disclosed on his currency declaration form.

He was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Kano on a single count of false declaration of foreign currency.

On July 12, 2015, the court convicted him and ordered that 25 percent of the undeclared sum be forfeited to the federal government.

Aminu appealed the ruling to the Court of Appeal in Kaduna, which on December 7, 2015, dismissed his appeal and upheld the original judgment.

He subsequently filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn both lower court rulings.

Lawyers for both sides have submitted written arguments, and the Supreme Court is expected to deliver its final judgment later today, bringing a legal matter that has persisted for over a decade closer to resolution.
