Suspected Thugs Strip Obaseki’s Cousin Naked in Edo

The Chief Executive Officer of Hosamudia Farm, Don Pedro Obaseki, was reportedly attacked and stripped naked by suspected thugs in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Sunday.

A video circulating on social media shows Obaseki being assaulted at Uwa Primary School, where he had gone to play football.

Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, was reportedly taken to the Oba’s Palace and made to kneel at the palace gate. The suspected thugs allegedly told palace guards that they had brought an “Oghion” (enemy) of the Oba.

Some palace chiefs, speaking in the Bini language, reportedly addressed the thugs, noting that the Oba was on his way to the Holy Arousa Cathedral for a thanksgiving service marking the end of the Igue festival. One chief warned, “Today is Thanksgiving Day at the Holy Arousa. We don’t want any trouble. If there is anybody that counts himself as an enemy of the Oba, allow him and see how he will end up.”

The chiefs later escorted Obaseki into the palace, despite protests from the suspected assailants.

Further details of the incident are still emerging.
