Nigerian actor and reality television personality Tayo Faniran has claimed that talent alone does not determine success in the Nigerian film industry, alleging that favouritism plays a significant role in deciding who gets opportunities.
Faniran made the remarks during a recent appearance on TVC’s entertainment programme, eSplash, where he spoke about his career and experiences in Nollywood.
The actor questioned the perception of the industry’s leading producers, actors and directors, arguing that those regarded as the biggest names are not necessarily the most talented.
“In Nollywood, the film producers, actors and directors you guys see and know as the biggest are not the most talented,” Faniran said.
He also expressed frustration over the trajectory of his own career, saying he believed he would have achieved more if opportunities in the industry were determined strictly by merit.

“If Nollywood were strictly about talent, I should be far beyond where I am. There is a lot of rigging in the industry,” he added.
Faniran’s comments were made while reflecting on his career and the challenges he believes have affected his progression in Nollywood.
The actor, who also gained recognition as a reality television personality, has previously spoken about the struggles he experienced before establishing himself in the entertainment industry.
His latest remarks have renewed discussion about the factors that influence career opportunities in Nigeria’s film industry, including talent, professional networks, visibility and industry relationships.
However, Faniran’s claims about favouritism and alleged “rigging” represent his personal assessment of the industry and were not accompanied by specific evidence or names during the interview.
