The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has transferred a temporary National Control Centre (NCC) in Abuja to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to strengthen electricity grid operations and improve the reliability of power supply across the country.
The handover, which took place on June 30, was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.
Located at the Gwagwalada 330kV Transmission Substation, the temporary facility is equipped with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) technology and telecommunications infrastructure for real-time monitoring and management of Nigeria’s national electricity grid.
According to TCN, the centre will serve as NISO’s temporary operational headquarters until the completion of the permanent National Control Centre currently under construction in Gwagwalada.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, TCN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sule Abdulaziz, represented by the General Manager, Project Coordination, Amini Tahir, described the development as a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to modernise electricity transmission infrastructure.
He explained that the facility was specifically built to accommodate the newly deployed SCADA/EMS and telecommunications systems alongside operational personnel responsible for monitoring the national grid.
Abdulaziz said the temporary control centre would enable NISO to coordinate grid operations more efficiently while preparations continue for the permanent control facility.
He expressed confidence that transferring the centre to NISO would enhance grid management, improve system reliability and ultimately lead to better electricity service delivery for Nigerians.

“We hand over this facility to NISO because we believe it is key to better grid management, improved system reliability, and better service delivery for Nigerians. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a stronger and more resilient grid,” he said.
The TCN boss also acknowledged the World Bank for supporting the project and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to collaboration and innovation aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s power sector.
On his part, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NISO, Abdu Mohammed Bello, represented by the General Manager, System Planning, Kabir Adamu, described the handover as an important step toward improving the operational efficiency of the national grid.
He noted that the SCADA/EMS infrastructure would provide NISO with the operational environment required to commence the next phase of the project’s deployment, pledging that the organisation would effectively manage the facility to ensure efficient grid operations.
Meanwhile, TCN’s Project Manager, Samuel Fakinlade, disclosed that all equipment and operational staff currently based at the temporary control centre would be relocated to the permanent National Control Centre once construction is completed, after which the temporary building would revert to TCN.
