President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, as the Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reforms.
The appointment was made public on Friday, March 7, 2025, in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Jega, who served as INEC Chairman from 2010 to 2015, co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Committee alongside Tinubu.
The committee had recommended the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development, which was created in July 2024 to tackle the recurring farmers-herders crisis in the country.
Onanuga stated, “President Bola Tinubu appoints Professor Attahiru Jega as Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms.”

The new ministry is tasked with providing solutions to end the prolonged conflicts between farmers and nomadic cattle herders, which have been a major source of tension across Nigeria.
Jega, 68, is also a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano State.
His appointment is expected to strengthen the implementation of the livestock reforms and ensure sustainable solutions to the age-long conflict.
