President Bola Tinubu has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a “towering influence” whose contributions will continue to shape Nigeria, Africa, and the world. He made the remarks while congratulating Obasanjo on his 89th birthday.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the 4th of March, 2026, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed joy in celebrating the life of the former president and respected elder statesman.
The president noted Obasanjo’s significant impact on the country and beyond, highlighting his bravery and sacrifices. Tinubu recalled that Obasanjo “served the nation as military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, and then handed over power to a civilian president in 1979. Later, he became the first civilian president in the Fourth Republic, from 1999 to 2007.”
He also acknowledged Obasanjo’s experiences in protecting Nigeria’s unity during the war, enduring imprisonment for speaking against unjust rule, and consistently advancing Africa’s political and economic interests.

As Obasanjo marks his 89th birthday, Tinubu praised “the passion and knowledge he has contributed to Nigeria’s growth through his writings and ongoing involvement, showing a strong love for the country and its development.”
The president concluded by praying for “many more years of good health, strength, and wisdom for the former president as he continues to help the nation and the world.”
