President Bola Tinubu on December 2, 2025, pledged N200 million to the Nigerian Legion, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of serving troops, injured officers, and families of fallen soldiers.
The announcement was contained in a press release issued same day by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy).
The National Assembly, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, donated N100 million, while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, contributed N20 million.
The contributions were made at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal launch at the Presidential Villa, where the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima, senior lawmakers, and service chiefs were decorated with the remembrance poppy by Morenike Grace Henry, Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion.
Tinubu urged public institutions, private businesses, and citizens to support the legion, which caters to military retirees and families of fallen heroes.
He commended the Armed Forces for stabilising conflict-prone areas and restoring security across several regions.
“As a grateful nation, we must honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answered the call to serve,” he said, describing the annual January 15 Remembrance Day as a reminder of unity and patriotism.
The President highlighted gains in security operations, citing the surrender of insurgents, neutralisation of terrorist leaders, release of captives, and improvements in maritime security supported by enhanced naval platforms and joint operations.

Tinubu added that the administration has strengthened welfare for service personnel through increased allowances, upgraded barracks, expanded healthcare services, and modernised pension verification using BVN and NIN integration.
Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, described the emblem as a symbol of national gratitude to veterans.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, noted that Remembrance Day honours the sacrifices of those who died in service and those still confronting terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed nationwide every January 15.
