President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the National Assembly to approve a ₦9.3 trillion increase in the 2026 federal budget, a move that would push the total spending plan from about ₦58.47 trillion to roughly ₦67.7 trillion.
The request was formally conveyed in a letter read on the Senate floor on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who subsequently referred it to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for further legislative action.
In the communication, the president explained that the proposed adjustment is aimed at covering outstanding financial commitments tied to ongoing capital projects, many of which span multiple budget cycles.
He noted that the additional funding would also support the completion of priority infrastructure and transport initiatives, while helping to sustain macroeconomic stability during the implementation phase of the budget.

The 2026 Appropriation Bill was initially presented to a joint session of the National Assembly on Friday, December 19, 2025, with a proposed expenditure of ₦58.18 trillion.
The plan outlined allocations across key areas, including debt servicing, recurrent spending and capital investment, as part of the administration’s broader fiscal and economic reform agenda.
The budget has already scaled the first and second readings in the Senate, with detailed committee work ongoing.
Lawmakers are now expected to scrutinise the president’s request and determine whether to incorporate the additional ₦9.3 trillion into the final appropriation framework.
The outcome of the deliberations will shape the scale of government spending for 2026, with implications for project execution, fiscal balance and the country’s broader economic management.
