President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to expedite consideration of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aimed at improving the administration and management of public senior secondary education across the country.
The request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Thursday.
In the correspondence, Tinubu informed lawmakers that the proposed amendment received the approval of the Federal Executive Council at its meeting on April 30, 2026, and has now been transmitted to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.
The President explained that the bill is designed to strengthen the National Senior Secondary Education Commission by enhancing its administrative and governance framework.
He noted that the proposed legislation aligns with his administration’s commitment to reinforcing educational institutions, improving learning standards and advancing national development through quality education.
Tinubu urged the Senate to give the bill speedy consideration and passage to support ongoing reforms in the education sector.

Following the presentation of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the proposed legislation to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action.
He directed the committee to schedule the bill for consideration and submit its report to the Senate within one week.
The National Senior Secondary Education Commission was established to oversee the development of public senior secondary education, coordinate education policies, support states through funding interventions and ensure quality standards across the sector.
If passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by the President, the amendment is expected to strengthen the commission’s legal framework and enhance its capacity to deliver its statutory responsibilities.
