President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress to embrace consensus, fairness and party unity as the ruling party begins its nationwide primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Thursday, May 14, 2026, and shared via X by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the commencement of the primaries as a “historic moment” for the APC as it prepares for its fourth election cycle since the party’s formation.
The President said the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, personal sacrifice and devotion, adding that such values had sustained the party through previous elections.
“The primary elections, kicking off with those for House of Representatives aspirants tomorrow and culminating in the presidential primaries on May 25, 2026, are not mere exercises to produce our standard bearers. They are a referendum on our unity, resilience and strength as a party,” Tinubu stated.
He acknowledged ongoing efforts by party leaders at various levels to produce consensus candidates in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the party’s constitution, describing the move as commendable.
According to him, consensus arrangements would help reduce rancour and strengthen party cohesion ahead of the general elections.
“I note the impressive progress made in this regard and encourage fellow party members to make the most of this window to ensure a seamless process and a more unified party,” he added.
The President, however, stressed that where consensus fails, aspirants and party members should approach the primaries peacefully and in the spirit of sportsmanship.
“We cannot afford rancorous conduct or the debasement of our democracy and party unity,” he warned.

Tinubu urged winners of the primaries not to gloat, while encouraging unsuccessful aspirants to accept outcomes in good faith and remain committed to the party.
“Our opponents are waiting for us to be against each other; we should disappoint them,” he said.
The President also called on governors and party leaders to provide a level playing field for all aspirants and avoid sentiments during the exercise.
“To the party leadership, our governors, and other leaders, I urge you to be fair and just. You must rise above sentiment to offer all aspirants a level playing field that guarantees participation without let or hindrance,” Tinubu stated.
He further appealed for greater inclusion of women and youths in the party’s internal electoral process, describing both demographics as critical to Nigeria’s future.
“The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart,” he said.
Tinubu also directed the police and other security agencies to remain professional throughout the primaries and avoid interfering beyond maintaining peace and order.
The APC primaries are expected to begin with House of Representatives contests and conclude with the party’s presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026.
