Nigeria’s top military and emergency officials have arrived in Maiduguri to directly oversee security and humanitarian response operations in the Northeast amid rising insurgent threats.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, and the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Zubaida Umar, landed in Maiduguri on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu issued the previous day.
The move was prompted by coordinated bomb attacks in the city on Monday, March 16, 2026, which left scores dead and many injured.

Upon arrival at the Maiduguri Air Force Base, the officials were received by commanders of the North East Joint Task Force and other senior military officers.
They then proceeded to the Maimalari Military Cantonment for strategic briefings with field commanders, assessing operational readiness and coordinating joint efforts between security forces and emergency management teams.
Their deployment is aimed at tightening command oversight, enhancing intelligence-driven responses, and ensuring that military operations and humanitarian interventions are fully synchronized.
Analysts say the presence of the service chiefs and NEMA director reflects a renewed federal push to protect civilians and stabilize Borno State against persistent Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks.
