Toyota CEO Koji Sato To Step Down, CFO Kenta Kon To Take Helm

Toyota Motor Corporation announced on Friday, February 6, 2026, that Chief Executive Officer Koji Sato will step down after three years leading the world’s largest automaker.

Chief Financial Officer Kenta Kon is set to assume the top executive position effective April 1, 2026.

Sato will transition to the newly created role of vice chairman and chief industry officer, focusing on broader industry collaboration and strategic oversight beyond Toyota’s internal operations.

The leadership change comes as Toyota faces rising competition from rapidly expanding Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers and seeks to strengthen its management structure and financial performance.

Kon, 57, joined Toyota in 1991 and has held senior financial and operational roles across the company. As CFO, he has led efforts to bolster Toyota’s financial results and streamline decision‑making.

His appointment as CEO is aimed at accelerating the company’s strategic initiatives and improving profitability amid challenging global market conditions.

Sato, who became CEO in April 2023, will retain key industry roles, including positions within Japan’s automobile industry associations, allowing him to continue influencing the sector while supporting Toyota’s long-term strategy.

The leadership transition is expected to be formalized at Toyota’s annual general meeting in June 2026.

Analysts view the move as a strategic effort to balance operational management with broader industry leadership, positioning Toyota to navigate an increasingly competitive global automotive market.
