Traffic Advisory: Ajegunle City Youth Marathon Prompts Road Diversions in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has published a traffic advisory in anticipation of the upcoming Ajegunle City Youth Marathon. The event is set to take place on Saturday, the 13th of December, 2025, commencing at 6:00 a.m. The marathon is being organized by the Society for Information and Human Advancement.

The public notice, which was released on Friday, the 12th of December, via the official X handle of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, details specific traffic diversions and partial closures designed to guarantee runner safety and maintain order along the designated route.

The Ministry specified that the closures will impact numerous key thoroughfares and interior roads within Ajegunle. The marathon route starts at the Maracana Stadium axis and includes:

Ojoku Street, Baale Road, Kirikiri Road, Wilmer Link Bridge, Okito Street, Kopariwo Street, Mba/Cardoso Street, Baale Road (Secretariat), Cemetery Street, Ojora Street, Baale Aiyetoro Street, Olowojeunjeje Street, Oduduwa Street, Layinka Street, Cemetery Road, Bakare Faro Street, Adejiyan Street, Ishaga Street, Onishapa Street, Itire Street, and Ojo Road

The race will terminate at Signal Barracks, the race’s finish point.

All junctions and intersections spanning the stretch from Maracana Stadium up to Signal Barracks on Ojo Road will undergo partial closures and will be actively managed by multiple agencies, including operatives of LASTMA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps. These access points are scheduled to be opened intermittently to allow controlled traffic flow as conditions permit.

To help minimise delays, motorists are encouraged to use the following suggested alternative routes:

From Berger/Apapa-Oshodi Expressway to Olodi Apapa via Kirikiri: Drivers should turn right into Industrial Road, connect Idewu Street, proceed through Oluwa Street, link Tolu Road, and rejoin Baale Road.

From Suru-Alaba (Lagos-Badagry Expressway) heading to Gaskiya and Iganmu Roads: A contraflow lane will be created along Cemetery Road from the Technoil turnoff to the roundabout.

From Suru-Alaba heading towards Ojo Road: Motorists should turn left before Signal Barracks into Charles Avenue, link Ligali Street, continue through Evie Street, join Abeje Street, and re-enter Ojo Road.

The government assured all residents and commuters that the disruptions caused by the event will be minimal.

Traffic officers are being strategically deployed to aid movement throughout the event. Road users are strongly urged to remain patient, follow designated diversion signs, and cooperate with traffic managers to ensure a safe and hitch-free marathon.
