Tragedy In Enugu: 11 Killed As Giant Tree Smashes Vehicles At Market

At least 11 people have died after a massive tree fell on two commercial vehicles at Awhum Village Market Square in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday and involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a Sienna minivan.

The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that the victims were passengers traveling from Old Park, Enugu, to various villages along the Awhum/Okpatu axis. The vehicles had reportedly stopped at the market square to drop off passengers when the tree, weakened by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and internal decay, collapsed on them.

Police operatives from the 9th Mile Division, with assistance from community members, rescued four people trapped in the vehicles. The 11 other victims were rushed to a hospital but were pronounced dead by attending doctors, and their remains have been deposited in the mortuary.

The four survivors are currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
