Tragedy in Niger State: Two Children Found Dead After Devastating Flood

A heartbreaking tragedy has struck Niger State as two children were confirmed dead following a heavy flood that swept through parts of Minna.

The body of a young girl, who had been reported missing after she was caught in the floodwaters, was discovered along Mandela Road — more than five kilometers from where she was last seen.

In a shocking twist, the body of another young boy, believed to have also drowned in the same flood, was found nearby.

The father of the girl, who had launched a frantic search for his daughter, made the grim discovery.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Hussaini Ibrahim, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and admitted that the agency had not been informed prior to the media inquiry.

“We were not aware of the disaster, but my team will visit the family at Tunga tomorrow to condole with them and gather more information,” Ibrahim told Channels Television.

The incident has sparked renewed concern over the growing threat of urban flooding in Niger State, particularly during the rainy season.

Many residents have raised alarms about poor drainage systems and lack of safety measures in vulnerable areas.

This tragic event follows a similar flooding disaster in Mokwa earlier in May, where over 150 people lost their lives and numerous homes were destroyed.

Calls are mounting for government action to address infrastructural deficits and ramp up public awareness campaigns to prevent further loss of life.

As the rains continue, many families across the state are left anxious, hoping their loved ones won’t be the next victims of an avoidable tragedy.
