Two Arrested, Remanded Over Illegal Revenue Collection In Anambra

The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency has detained two individuals over alleged involvement in unlawful revenue collection, as authorities intensify efforts to curb extortion and unauthorised levies across the state.

The suspects, identified as Michael Uwaoma and Ndubuisi Aniukwu, were arrested at Mgbuka Obosi and Umusiome Junction in Nkpor, both located within Idemili North Local Government Area.

They are accused of extorting money from traders and commercial operators in those areas.

Details of the arrests were made public in a statement released on Thursday by the agency’s spokesperson, Karen James.

According to her, the operation aligns with the agency’s mandate to stamp out illegal collections and restore order.

Following their arrest, the suspects were brought before a Magistrate Court, which ordered their remand in a correctional facility pending the outcome of the case.

“The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency has arrested two suspects for illegal revenue collection as part of its continued enforcement operations aimed at eliminating illegal revenue collection and extortion across the state.

“The individuals, Michael Uwaoma and Ndubuisi Aniukwu, were apprehended for allegedly extorting traders and commercial operators at Mgbuka Obosi and Umusiome Junction, Nkpor, respectively.

Preliminary investigations further revealed that Aniukwu acted under the directive of one Onyekwelu, who allegedly imposed a daily remittance target.

“Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before a competent Magistrate’s Court, where they were remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case.”

The court later granted the defendants bail under strict conditions, including a ₦100,000 bail bond, payment of a ₦300,000 fine, and the provision of a verified Level 17 civil servant as surety. The matter has been adjourned until June 3, 2026, for further hearing.

Reaffirming the agency’s position, James stressed its zero-tolerance policy on illegal levies and extortion, noting that SASA remains committed to safeguarding legitimate businesses and maintaining a lawful environment for residents.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report any incidents of illegal collection or harassment to the appropriate authorities,” the statement added.

In a related development, the agency recently destroyed illicit drugs estimated at ₦80 million following coordinated raids in multiple parts of the state.

The exercise, carried out on April 2, covered areas such as Onitsha and surrounding communities.

Speaking on the operation, SASA Managing Director, Monday Nwokoye, said the raids were intelligence-driven and conducted across several locations, including Nsugbe in Anambra East, Umuchu in Aguata, Ojoto and Oba in Idemili South, Nkpor in Idemili North, Nkwelle Ezunaka in Oyi, as well as parts of Onitsha.

He noted that the crackdown highlights the agency’s continued resolve to tackle both illegal drug activities and touting across Anambra State.
