In a significant crackdown on illegal oil operations, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG SIS) has successfully apprehended a suspect involved in oil theft, dismantled an illicit artisanal oil refinery, and severed an illegal connection to a key oil pipeline in Abia State.
The operation took place in the Umuorie and Isimiri communities, where the CG SIS discovered that an artisanal refinery was actively functioning.
The refinery was connected to the official trunk line via an illegal setup involving fireproof hoses stretching approximately 100 meters. This illegal connection tapped into the trunkline, posing significant environmental and economic risks.

The NSCDC, under the leadership of the Commandant General, has intensified its efforts to curb oil theft and illegal refining activities, which have been detrimental to the country’s oil sector and local communities.
“The successful discovery and destruction of this artisanal refinery is a major step towards safeguarding national assets and ensuring the safety of our communities,” the NSCDC said in a statement.
This operation highlights the continued commitment of the NSCDC to enforcing laws and protecting Nigeria’s natural resources from exploitation and illegal activities.
Investigations into the suspect’s involvement and possible connections to a larger network of oil theft are ongoing.
