U.S. Embassy In Abuja, Lagos Consulate To Close For Presidents’ Day

The United States Embassy in Abuja and its Consulate General in Lagos will remain closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day, the  Mission in Nigeria announced on Sunday.

A statement posted on the mission’s official X account said normal operations will resume following the public holiday.

“Originally established to honor George Washington’s birthday, Presidents’ Day now celebrates all U.S. presidents and their leadership in shaping the nation’s history and positively influencing the world,” the statement read.

Presidents’ Day a federal U.S. Embassy In Abuja, Lagos Consulate To Close For Presidents’ Day in the United States, was first instituted to commemorate Washington, who also introduced the first “Badge of Military Merit”—the precursor to today’s Purple Heart. Over time, the holiday has evolved to honor the achievements and legacies of all U.S. presidents.
