UN Salutes Buhari’s Role in West Africa’s Stability

The United Nations has expressed sorrow over the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at 82.

In a message delivered by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari”.

Guterres praised Buhari’s impact on Nigeria’s progress and his efforts in fostering peace across West Africa.

“During his tenure, President Buhari demonstrated a deep commitment to the sovereignty, stability and development of his country,” Guterres noted.

“He also played a key role in promoting regional peace and security in West Africa and the Lake Chad Basin.”

Buhari, once a military head of state who later became a two-term civilian president, was widely acknowledged for his anti-corruption drive and strong support for joint regional security efforts.

The UN Secretary-General described him as “a strong advocate for multilateral and regional cooperation,” pointing out how this strengthened Nigeria’s influence in ECOWAS during his leadership.

Meanwhile in New York, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed visited the Nigerian consulate to honour Buhari. Mohammed, who served as Nigeria’s Environment Minister under Buhari, signed the condolence register and offered prayers.

“He was a true patriot who believed in his country, believed in his people and did the best that he could,” Mohammed said.

She highlighted his “unwavering discipline, deep conviction and steadfast patriotism,” and said his legacy would endure beyond his years in office.

She also spoke of Buhari’s determination to promote Nigeria’s and Africa’s priorities on global platforms, particularly in discussions on climate, counterterrorism, and economic change.
