The Plateau State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old student of the University of Jos, David Nanpon Timmap, for allegedly killing and burying his colleague, Peter Mata Mafurai, 22, in a shallow grave inside his apartment at Rusau village in Jos North Local Government Area.
According to police authorities, the incident occurred on Saturday, October 25, 2025, when officers attached to the Laranto Police Division received a distress call at about 9:30 a.m. and immediately mobilised to the scene.
Spokesperson for the command, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, October 26, 2025, describing the act as “gruesome and deeply disturbing.”
“Upon receiving credible information, the Divisional Police Officer of Laranto Division led a team of officers to the scene. The suspect was apprehended, and a preliminary investigation revealed that he had buried the victim in a shallow grave inside his room,” Alabo said.
The police later exhumed the body and deposited it at Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos, for autopsy.

DSP Alabo added that the suspect is in custody while investigations continue to determine the motive behind the killing. He assured the public that justice will be served.
“The Plateau State Police Command condemns this act in its entirety and has commenced a full investigation to ensure the perpetrator faces the full weight of the law,” he said.
The University of Jos community has reportedly been thrown into mourning over the incident, which has reignited discussions on campus safety and mental health awareness among students.
