Veteran broadcaster Aliyu Abubakar Getso, one of Northern Nigeria’s most respected radio personalities, has died in Kano after a prolonged illness.
Family members confirmed that Getso passed away in the early hours of Sunday, October 5, 2025, at his residence in Janbulo, Kano.
His daughter, Aisha Getso, announced his death in a Facebook post, revealing that he died around 3:00 a.m.
Funeral prayers (Janazah) were held later that morning at 9:30 a.m. at his home near Second Gate, Janbulo, in the Kabuga area of the city, followed by his burial according to Islamic rites.
Getso was a familiar voice to millions across Northern Nigeria, having worked with several top radio stations, including the Kano State Radio Corporation, Freedom Radio, Premier Radio, and Vision FM.
He was admired for his deep, expressive voice and engaging presentation style in both Hausa and English.

Colleagues described him as a consummate professional and mentor whose career inspired a generation of young broadcasters.
His programmes were known for their clarity, balance, and commitment to public enlightenment.
Getso is survived by three wives, children, and grandchildren.
Tributes have continued to pour in from journalists, media executives, and fans who described his death as a great loss to Northern Nigeria’s broadcasting industry and to the nation at large.
