The League of Veteran Journalists in Ekiti State has called on political stakeholders, candidates and voters to shun violence and uphold democratic principles ahead of the state’s governorship election scheduled for June 20, 2026.
The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the association’s monthly meeting held on Wednesday at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Ado-Ekiti.
The veteran journalists urged all participants in the electoral process to conduct themselves responsibly and ensure that the election is peaceful, credible and reflective of the will of the people.
The communiqué, issued under the leadership of the League’s Chairman, Prince Kayode Oni, noted that Ekiti State has enjoyed a reputation for political stability and peaceful electoral contests over the years.
According to the group, preserving that legacy is essential as residents prepare to elect a new governor.
The journalists observed that the state has largely remained free from major incidents of political violence and expressed hope that the forthcoming election would further strengthen its democratic credentials.
They stressed that the conduct of political actors before, during and after the poll would play a crucial role in maintaining peace and public confidence in the electoral process.
The association also noted that the election is attracting significant attention from observers within and outside the state, making it important for all stakeholders to demonstrate maturity and respect for democratic norms.

The veteran journalists further appealed to political parties and their supporters to focus on issue-based campaigns and avoid actions capable of inciting tension or disrupting public order.
They urged voters to participate peacefully in the electoral process and resist any attempts to undermine the integrity of the election.
The group also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct the governorship election in accordance with established rules and electoral guidelines.
According to the communiqué, the electoral body must remain impartial and ensure that all contestants are treated fairly throughout the process.
The journalists emphasised the need for transparency, professionalism and adherence to due process by election officials to guarantee the credibility of the outcome.
They expressed confidence that a peaceful and transparent election would further consolidate democracy in Ekiti State and serve as an example for other parts of the country.
The appeal comes as political parties intensify preparations for the governorship contest, with security agencies, election observers and other stakeholders also mobilising ahead of the poll.
The June 20 election is expected to be a significant political event in the state, with voters set to determine the leadership direction of Ekiti for the next electoral cycle.
