Former Nigerian Military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has confirmed that late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola won the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
According to Babangida, June 12 happened under his watch, adding that mistakes, oversights, and missteps occurred in quick succession. “In all matters we acted in the supreme national interest so that Nigeria could survive,” he said.
The former president also noted that the Nation’s match to democracy was interrupted, a fact that he deeply regret, claiming that Nigeria survived and democracy is still alive.
This disclosure was made in Babangida’s newly launched autobiography, ‘A Journey in Service’, during a book unveiling event in Abuja on Thursday.
First News correspondent report that Babangida acknowledged to journalists on Thursday that MKO Abiola, who ran under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), had garnered both the highest number of votes and the necessary geographical spread to secure the presidency.

He said, “I accept full responsibility for all decisions made under my watch.
“June 12 happened under my watch. Mistakes, oversights, and missteps occurred in quick succession.
“In all matters we acted in the supreme national interest so that Nigeria could survive.
“Our Nation’s match to democracy was interrupted, a fact that I deeply regret, but Nigeria survived and democracy is still alive.”
