VIDEO: Retired Police Officer Slams ₦2.8m Gratuity After 35 Years of Service

A retired Superintendent of Police, Emmanuel Friday Iraborie, has expressed outrage over the ₦2.87 million gratuity he received after serving in the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years.

Iraborie, who retired from the Edo State Police Command on July 1, 2024, described the payment as “highly unacceptable,” lamenting the financial hardship faced by retired officers despite decades of service.

In a video trending online, the visibly disappointed officer detailed his entitlements, disclosing that his lump sum gratuity stood at ₦2,870,451, while his pension arrears amounted to ₦706,915.

“I am SP Emmanuel Friday Iraborie. I retired on July 1, 2024. My gratuity lump sum is ₦2,870,451, and my pension arrears is ₦706,915. For 35 years I served the Nigeria Police, and this is what I am given. That is unacceptable,” he said in the video.

The viral video has sparked renewed criticism of the welfare of retired security personnel in Nigeria, many of whom complain of poor retirement packages and neglect after long years of service.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the National Pension Commission (PenCom) had responded to the allegations.
