The courtesy visit by His Excellency Ambassador Le Viet Hoang, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Nigeria, to His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, opens an exciting window for deeper economic relations between Vietnam, Bayelsa State and Nigeria.
Professor Steve Azaiki, OON, was privileged to be present at the meeting. As a distinguished son of Bayelsa State and Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Ritman University, Akwa Ibom State, he was particularly encouraged by the prospect of strengthening economic and investment ties between Vietnam and Bayelsa.
Discussions centred on opportunities for Vietnamese investment in Bayelsa State, with the Governor extending an invitation to the Ambassador and Vietnamese businessmen to visit the State and explore its enormous investment potential. The Ambassador was accompanied by the First Secretary, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung.
Vietnam offers a compelling model for Bayelsa and Nigeria. Its remarkable economic transformation has been driven substantially by manufacturing, agro-processing, technology, export-oriented industries and foreign investment.
Vietnamese expertise could be particularly valuable in areas such as agro-processing, fisheries and aquaculture, palm oil and cassava processing, food production, light manufacturing, textiles, renewable energy and construction materials.

For Bayelsa, such investments can help convert its abundant natural and agricultural resources into finished products, creating employment, technology transfer, skills development, new businesses and increased internally generated revenue, while reducing dependence on crude oil.
For Nigeria, stronger economic relations with Vietnam can contribute to industrialisation, export diversification, technology transfer, youth employment and greater integration into global manufacturing value chains.
The Governor’s invitation is therefore much more than a diplomatic gesture. It represents an opportunity to build a practical and mutually beneficial economic partnership between Bayelsa, Vietnam and Nigeria.
As a proud Bayelsan, Professor Steve Azaiki, OON, believes that Bayelsa should seize this opportunity and actively position itself as a destination for Vietnamese capital, technology and manufacturing expertise.
The future of Bayelsa must be about investment, industrialisation, innovation and jobs, and partnerships such as this can help make that future a reality.
