Nigerians seeking visas to the United States have been cautioned against expecting a refund if their applications are unsuccessful, as the US Mission in Nigeria says the fees cover processing rather than visa approval.
The mission issued the warning on Wednesday, October 14, in a post on its official social media account, @USinNigeria, addressing what it described as a misconception about the refund policy.
“MYTH: If a U.S. visa application is refused, the applicant receives a refund,” the mission stated.
It explained that applicants pay for the assessment of their submissions and the process leading to a final decision, not for an assurance that they will be allowed to travel to the US.
“FACT: The fee paid is an application processing fee, not a payment for a visa to be issued,” the statement read.
The mission added that the charge remains payable regardless of the decision reached by consular officials.
“It covers the cost of processing the application through a final decision, so the fee is non-refundable, regardless of whether the visa is issued or refused,” it added.

The clarification means applicants should carefully consider the financial implications before submitting their applications, as a refusal does not entitle them to recover the processing fee.
The mission directed prospective travellers to the US Department of State’s official website, travel.state.gov, for accurate information on visa procedures and requirements.
It also cautioned visa seekers to be wary of individuals or organisations promising guaranteed approvals or claiming that application deposits can be refunded.
Such offers could expose applicants to fraud, particularly when they rely on unofficial intermediaries instead of verified government information.
The mission advised Nigerians to consult official US government websites, especially those ending in “.gov”, when seeking guidance on visa applications.
The warning comes as a reminder that meeting application requirements and paying the prescribed fees do not automatically guarantee a visa, with each application subject to the relevant assessment process.
