The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has pledged to do everything in its power to defend democracy in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections, Caretaker National Vice-Chairman (South-South) Emmanuel Ogidi has said.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday, February 1, Ogidi acknowledged that the party faces minor internal challenges but insisted that these would not stop its mission to provide a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Yes, today we have some pockets of trouble in the PDP, but we are resolute, and we believe in God because we know that we are the only viable opposition.
“We are going to fight for that cause; we will do whatever it takes to ensure that we have democracy. If we do not have democracy, then we will have a banana republic,” Ogidi said.
He explained that the party intends to reach across political divides to strengthen democratic governance, including engaging with members of the APC where possible.

“We are going to reach out to anybody reachable in the other political parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress. We want to see what we can take away from these parties; else, this country will face more serious challenges,” he said.
Ogidi stressed that the PDP’s priorities for 2027 include protecting democratic institutions, maintaining national unity, and offering Nigerians a trustworthy political alternative.
He criticised the APC for focusing more on electioneering than governance, warning that weakening democratic structures could destabilise the country.
“We understand the gravity of the current political situation, and because of that, we will not disappoint the people; we want to do whatever it takes, and we are determined,” he added.
