We’re Looking into Wike-Naval Officer Dispute Incident— Defence Minister

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has confirmed that the ministry is investigating the recent confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, A. M. Yerima, over a disputed land in Abuja.

Speaking on Wednesday, November 12, during a press briefing to mark the commencement of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the National Defence College, Badaru assured that no military officer performing lawful duties would be left unprotected.

“Well, at the ministry, and indeed the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers on lawful duty. We are looking into this issue, and we assure all that any officer on lawful duty will be highly protected.

“We will not allow anything to happen to him so long as he is doing his job, and he is doing his job very well,” Badaru said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when Wike visited the disputed land, allegedly belonging to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo (retd.).

A video obtained by First Daily showed Wike questioning the military presence at the site and challenging the officer over the claimed unlawful occupation.
