West Ham United have confirmed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Southampton in a transfer valued at up to £42 million. The announcement was made on Friday, August 29, 2025.
The 20-year-old joins on a five-year contract after two successful seasons at Southampton, where he arrived from Sporting CP in July 2023.
He quickly became a central figure for the Saints, making 64 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing eight assists.
His performances earned him a reputation as one of the most promising young midfielders in the Premier League.
West Ham agreed an initial fee of £38 million with Southampton, with a further £4 million in performance-related add-ons.
The deal also includes a sell-on clause, giving Southampton a percentage of any future transfer.

Fernandes’ arrival makes him West Ham’s third most expensive signing in history, underscoring the club’s intent to strengthen under new manager Julen Lopetegui.

Southampton, in a statement on their official website, described Fernandes as a “special talent” and thanked him for his contribution before wishing him success at his new club.
The move marks West Ham’s latest high-profile signing of the summer as the club looks to reinforce its midfield options.
