Why I Declared Interest In Oyo Governorship — Popular Broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat

Popular Oyo State-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, has explained the reasons behind his decision to contest the 2027 governorship election in the state under the Accord Party, attributing it to what he described as divine intervention.

Hamzat made this known on Monday during one of his programmes on Agidigbo FM, while appreciating supporters and advisers who attended his declaration rally at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, on Saturday.

The broadcaster, known for his popular Yoruba catchphrase, “e gbenu si mic” (speak to the microphone), said he carefully considered divergent opinions from advisers who either encouraged or warned him against contesting before submitting the matter to God, whom he said approved his decision.

“I thank all my advisers, especially those who warned me against contesting. I weighed the advice of those who encouraged me and those who cautioned me. I tabled it before God, and He approved my contesting,” Hamzat said.

He added that he did not disregard the concerns of those opposed to his ambition, noting that their advice was borne out of love and concern. He appealed for forgiveness and support from anyone offended by his decision.

“I want to serve the people and not be like most corrupt politicians. I believe I will win because the people are for me, and I didn’t buy anyone to attend the event,” he stated.

Hamzat also dismissed the views of critics who doubt his chances at the polls, saying he had moved past fears of electoral defeat or manipulation.

“We have moved on from whether I will be rigged out or lose the election. I am seeking all your support,” he said.

Recall that the broadcaster formally declared his intention to run for governor on Saturday during a rally in Ibadan, where he announced his decision to join the Accord Party as his political platform.

According to him, he never planned to join partisan politics or seek elective office, adding that his past political involvement was limited to supporting others.

“Today, I am publicly declaring my intention to join Accord and to contest the Oyo governorship election in 2027 as a candidate,” Hamzat told supporters at the rally.

He further stated that his ambition was not driven by financial capacity, political influence or the backing of the government in power.

“I don’t have money or political connections, and I don’t have the backing of the government of the day. I have come with God, and that is all I need,” the Kokoro Alate programme host said.
