Wike-Backed PDP Faction Inaugurate Enugu Caretaker Team After Mbah’s Defection

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory has installed a new caretaker committee for Enugu State, marking the party’s latest attempt to rebuild its structure after recent political upheavals.

The inauguration, held on Sunday, November 30, in Enugu, was conducted by the factional acting National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulraham Mohameed, alongside the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu. Party members from all 17 local government areas were in attendance.

The reshuffling follows Governor Peter Mbah’s dramatic defection to the All Progressives Congress on October 24, 2025, a move that saw his cabinet and senior state executives join him, ending the PDP’s 26-year dominance in the state.

The new caretaker team is headed by former Igboeze South Local Government boss, Vitus Okechi, who will serve as chairman. Chukwunonye Okereke was sworn in as secretary.

Okechi, in his first remarks, promised to rebuild the party’s influence and reward those who remained loyal during the mass exodus.

He declared, “Enugu State is PDP, and PDP is Enugu State. We appreciate those who refused to defect despite challenges. Your loyalty will be rewarded. Returning to the Lion Building in 2027 is fait accompli.”

He said the caretaker committee would embark on a more strategic and energetic mobilisation drive, with plans to revive structures across communities.

Okereke stressed the importance of integrity and competence in steering the party back to relevance.

“We are committed to a recalibrated PDP driven by honesty, appreciation of members, and proper administrative competence,” he said.

Former state vice chairman, Dr Okey Ozoani, described the new leadership as a corrective step after years of internal disconnection.

He noted that “2027 offers us an opportunity to restore our legacy.”

Other stakeholders, including Dr Nnamdi Onyia, Prof (Mrs) Iloh, Celine Ugwu, Chizoba Ezeagor, Chief Ken Obiora, Chief Chukwujekwu Nebo and Chief Obiora Ugwu, expressed optimism that the party’s recovery had begun, urging the committee to reactivate structures across all 260 wards.
