Wike Bans Car Lots In Abuja Green Areas

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered an immediate end to the use of parks, gardens and designated green areas in Abuja as car dealership lots.

His Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, announced the directive on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

Wike expressed concern over the conversion of recreational spaces, including parts of Millennium Park, for commercial activities and directed relevant authorities to stop unauthorized use of such areas.

The FCT Administration has constituted a task force to enforce the order and prevent further encroachment on designated green spaces.

The minister also ordered a probe into alleged approvals granted by civil servants for the use of green areas as car lots.

Those summoned by FCT Head of Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, include directors overseeing Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management and Urban Affairs.

The investigation will establish how the affected areas were approved for commercial use and determine responsibility for any violations.

The directive comes a day after Wike ordered the removal of structures obstructing waterways in flood-prone parts of Abuja, following recent flooding in the capital.

The measures reinforce the FCT Administration’s push to protect green spaces, waterways and Abuja’s approved land-use plan.
