Wike’s Ally Olaka Nwogu Wins Rivers South-East Senate Seat

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Olaka Nwogu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District by-election held on Saturday.

Announcing the results, the Returning Officer for the election, Rosemary Ogu, said Nwogu secured 47,961 votes to defeat his opponents in the contest.

According to the results released by INEC, Beke Fabeke of the Action Alliance (AA) polled 1,175 votes, while Osarosaka Ebenezer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) garnered 1,647 votes. Sam Bariboa of the Labour Party (LP) received 367 votes.

The by-election was conducted to fill the vacant senatorial seat following the death of former senator Barinada Mpigi in February.

Nwogu, who is aligned with the PDP faction backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, expressed gratitude to voters after his victory and pledged to provide effective representation for the people of the district.

The senator-elect is no stranger to elective office. He represented the Tai/Eleme/Oyigbo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2011 on the platform of the PDP.

In 2015, Nwogu was elected to the Senate after defeating PO wè Magnus Abe of the APC. However, his victory was later nullified by the Court of Appeal, and he subsequently lost the rerun election ordered by the court.

His latest victory marks a return to the National Assembly, where he will now represent Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the Senate.
