Wike’s Spokesman Mocks NLC As FCTA Workers Resume

Lere Olayinka, the spokesperson to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to be explicit about its demands from the minister.

Olayinka made the remarks on Monday, the 2nd of February, 2026, as employees of the FCT Administration (FCTA) returned to work, despite the NLC’s planned industrial action.

Earlier, the NLC Chairman in the FCT, Comrade Stephen Knabayi, had issued a directive calling on all affiliated unions in Abuja to appear in union regalia for a mass protest slated for Tuesday, the 3rd of February, 2026.

The planned protest follows an earlier strike action by FCTA workers under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), who downed tools on the 9th of January, over unresolved demands and unpaid allowances.

Last week, Wike had cautioned workers who failed to resume duties on Monday, stressing that the FCTA had already addressed some of the issues raised by the unions.

Reacting to the situation, Olayinka ridiculed the NLC, stating that FCTA workers had ignored calls by both JUAC and the labour congress to stay away from work.

In a post shared on X, Olayinka wrote:
“Today is Monday, February 2, 2026. Workers in the FCTA and FCDA are at work. Dem no dey listen to JUAC and NLC.

“But NLC is still mobilising for protest tomorrow in support of FCTA workers that are at their duty posts as I write.

“NLC wants people to abandon their own duty posts tomorrow to come and protest for FCTA workers who will be at work, doing their jobs.

“Issorite. Las las, NLC will tell Nigerians what it wants from Wike and the FCT.”

He insisted that the labour body should clearly outline its expectations, rather than mobilising protests while workers continue their normal duties.
