Police authorities in Imo State have arrested a woman accused of brutally assaulting a teenage girl who was living under her care.
The arrest followed allegations that the woman subjected the girl to severe physical abuse, leaving her with serious injuries, particularly around her eyes.
According to reports shared on Thursday by journalist and activist Chidiebube Okeoma, police officers carried out the arrest after receiving information about the alleged incident.
Images and videos circulating online showed the teenager with severe swelling around both eyes.
The suspect, who is said to be from Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, allegedly assaulted the girl with a stick.
The victim, who is also reported to be from Enugu State, has since been taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Okeoma, who disclosed the development on social media, said the intervention was aimed at ensuring that the teenager received urgent medical attention and that the suspect was brought to justice.
The incident has generated widespread outrage online, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation and strict punishment for anyone found guilty of child abuse.
As of the time of this report, the Imo State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident or the charges that may be brought against the suspect.
