‘Write Your Will’, Otti Not Threatening Violence, Statement Figurative — Abia Govt

The Abia State Government has dismissed claims that Governor Alex Otti’s recent comment about “writing wills before writing election results” was a threat of violence, describing it instead as a figurative warning against electoral malpractice.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, the government said the governor’s remark was taken out of context and simply reflected his commitment to protecting the integrity of elections in the state.

Kanu explained that Otti’s statement underscored his administration’s determination to defend the people’s mandate and uphold democratic values.

“Governor Otti’s statement, in which he advised those planning to ‘write election results’ in future elections to ‘first write their wills,’ was neither a threat nor a call to violence.

“Rather, it was a figurative expression underscoring his administration’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law, the sanctity of the ballot, and the protection of the people’s mandate,” the statement read.

The government reaffirmed that the 1999 Constitution vests power in the people, while the 2022 Electoral Act criminalises all forms of election rigging and manipulation.

Kanu further described Governor Otti as a peaceful leader who has not used his position to intimidate or silence critics since assuming office on May 29, 2023.

“Governor Otti remains a man of peace. Since assuming office, he has not engaged in Gestapo-style intimidation or detained perceived political opponents, despite their malicious criticisms,” Kanu stated.

He added that the governor’s stance reflects his administration’s commitment to fair elections, transparency, and accountability, ensuring that future polls in Abia will truly reflect the will of the people.
