Xenophobia: Another 111 Nigerians Return From South Africa Under FG Scheme

The Federal Government has evacuated another 111 Nigerians from South Africa, bringing the total number of returnees to 2,037 since the exercise began on June 10, 2026, amid concerns over xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, on Sunday, October 11.

The returnees, comprising 44 men, 23 women and 44 children, arrived in Lagos aboard South African Airways flight SA060 on Thursday, October 8.

Officials of the ministry, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and the National Emergency Management Agency received them.

The evacuation was funded by a $265,854 donation from the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) to cover one-way tickets for 500 distressed Nigerians.

The latest operation was the 15th under the exercise. A previous batch of 105 Nigerians arrived on October 2, bringing the cumulative figure at the time to 1,926.

The ministry said the Federal Government had fully covered the repatriation costs of 1,388 returnees, while the RCCG donation had funded tickets for 318 people, leaving 182 under the church’s commitment.

The government thanked the RCCG, led by its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, for its contribution and pledged to continue engaging South African authorities to address xenophobia and Afrophobia.

It advised Nigerians in South Africa to obey local laws, remain vigilant and seek consular assistance through the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria or the Consulate General in Johannesburg when necessary.
