Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, is set to inaugurate Murtala Garo as the new Deputy Governor of the state on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
The deputy governorship seat became vacant following the resignation of Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo in late March 2026.
Gwarzo, who served as Yusuf’s running mate during the 2023 election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), stepped down after the governor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His refusal to join the new party deepened political tensions and led to moves by the Kano State House of Assembly to impeach him.
The fallout between both leaders intensified as political differences widened. While Governor Yusuf and most members of his cabinet aligned with the APC, Gwarzo remained with the NNPP and its leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The situation triggered accusations from both sides, with the governor alleging that his former deputy had plotted to remove him from office.
Amid the growing crisis, the State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Gwarzo over alleged misconduct.
He eventually resigned, a move seen as an attempt to ease tensions and allow the administration to stabilise.
Following consultations, particularly with APC stakeholders, Governor Yusuf nominated Garo, a former local government chairman and the APC’s deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 election.
The Kano State House of Assembly subsequently screened and confirmed his nomination.
Garo is expected to be sworn in at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, at 11:00am.
