The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved the partyโs executive committee in Kano State, including all local government and ward executives, ahead of the anticipated defection of Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The dissolution was announced in a statement issued on Friday by the NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Oladipo Johnson, who said the party would soon constitute a caretaker committee to oversee its affairs in the state.
The development comes amid a deepening political crisis between the NNPP national leader and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Governor Yusuf, who is reportedly on the verge of joining the APC, a move said to be strongly opposed by Kwankwaso.
The Kano State chapter of the APC has also confirmed that Yusuf is expected to formally defect to the party in the coming days.
Johnson said the decision of the NWC followed an emergency meeting and was taken in line with the provisions of the partyโs constitution.
