16-Year-Old Sets New ICAN Record, Wins Minister’s Commendation

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has congratulated 16-year-old Osasere Okundaye on becoming Nigeria’s youngest chartered accountant, describing the milestone as an inspiring demonstration of excellence, discipline and determination.

In a statement on Monday, June 29, 2026, Olawande said the achievement underscores the immense potential of Nigerian youths and proves that age is no barrier to success.

He said Okundaye’s record should inspire young Nigerians to pursue excellence with focus and resilience, while reaffirming the Federal Ministry of Youth Development’s commitment to policies and programmes that empower young people to realize their potential.

The minister also commended her parents, teachers, mentors and others who supported her journey, noting that their guidance contributed significantly to her success.

He wished the teenager greater accomplishments in the future, expressing confidence that her story would encourage more youths to dream bigger and aim higher.

Okundaye recently qualified as a chartered accountant through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), becoming the youngest person to earn the professional designation in the country at 16.

She surpassed the previous record set in 2022 by Jonathan Adewale, who qualified as Nigeria’s youngest chartered accountant at the age of 17.

The ICAN qualification is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most rigorous professional credentials, with candidates required to pass several stages of professional examinations before being admitted into the institute as chartered accountants.
