The National Emergency Management Agency has said that about 17,000 people were displaced by flooding in Kaduna and Katsina states.
The Head of Operations at NEMA’s Kaduna office, Suleiman Muhammad, disclosed this on Tuesday during an assessment tour of communities affected after the agency’s relief interventions. He said the flooding, which began in late August, triggered the immediate deployment of search-and-rescue teams in collaboration with other response agencies.
According to him, evacuations were carried out in Kigo Road, Bachama Road in Tudun Wada, Rafin Guza, Haliru Dantoro, Nasarawa and other submerged locations in Kaduna metropolis. An internally displaced persons’ camp was established on September 13 in Tudun Wada to shelter families from Bachama Road, with mattresses, blankets, mosquito nets and other essentials supplied by NEMA.
Muhammad said nine communities in Kaduna metropolis recorded 11,919 displaced persons, while Tudun Jukum and Kamacha in Zaria had 1,644 affected residents. In Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State, 3,499 residents were displaced across Galadima I, Galadima II and Gachi communities. He confirmed three deaths in Kankia but noted that no casualties were recorded in Kaduna or Zaria.
He added that damage reports had been forwarded to NEMA headquarters for further action.
Residents who spoke with NAN commended NEMA for its prompt response. The Commander of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Kaduna Branch, Ahmad Tijjani, said response agencies worked jointly from the onset of the disaster.
“We rescued 43 households and moved them to the Tudun Wada camp. About 239 houses were affected in that community alone,” he said, adding that minor medical cases, including malaria and diarrhoea, were promptly treated by deployed health teams.

Some beneficiaries, however, appealed for long-term interventions. Nasiru Suleiman, a resident of Bachama Road, urged authorities to dredge waterways, saying the area had suffered recurrent flooding for more than 30 years. Another victim, Rukaiya Muhammad, lamented the loss of homes, livelihoods and small businesses, while Amanda Stephen, displaced from Kajuru, stressed the need for durable recovery support as several houses were destroyed.
The NEMA team also visited the office of the senator representing Kaduna Central to deliver additional relief materials for distribution to flood victims in Kaduna South.
In November, NEMA reported that 433,578 people had been affected by flooding across 27 states and 123 local government areas as of November 4, 2025. It added that 144,790 people were displaced, 241 lives lost, 839 persons injured and 115 declared missing nationwide.
