2027: Abia ALGON Backs Otti’s Re-Election, Counters Ex-Govs Threats

The Abia State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has endorsed Governor Alex Otti for a second term in the 2027 elections, citing his performance and leadership as key reasons for their support.

In a statement issued in Umuahia on Friday, January 16, and signed by ALGON Abia chairman Chinedum Ekeke, the group also passed a vote of confidence in Otti’s administration, highlighting his commitment to restoring integrity, efficiency, and stability in the state.

The endorsement comes in the wake of recent comments from three former governors, led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who declared that Otti would not secure re-election.

ALGON rejected this position, emphasising that “the future of the state remains firmly in the hands of its people, whose collective judgment must always be respected.”

The local government body urged political actors to focus on constructive contributions rather than divisive rhetoric, stating, “It is inappropriate for any individual or group to attempt to pre-empt the democratic process or undermine the visible progress being recorded in the state through speculative political statements.”

ALGON highlighted several achievements under Otti’s leadership, including improvements across the 17 local governments in road rehabilitation, healthcare, and education, prompt payment of salaries and pensions, elimination of salary backlogs, and prudent management of public resources.

“Since the assumption of office, the administration of Governor Alex Otti has demonstrated a clear commitment to good governance, fiscal responsibility, and service delivery,” the statement noted.

The communiqué further stressed that citizens’ renewed pride in Abia, both locally and in the diaspora, reflects growing confidence in the government.

“Members of ALGON are in constant interaction with our communities, and we can attest to the public’s confidence in governance and the tangible benefits currently being experienced by our people,” it added.

Concluding, ALGON reinforced that leadership should be determined by performance and the electorate’s will, not by political pronouncements or speculation: “Public discourse must be approached with facts, not falsehoods, exaggerations, or revisionist narratives.

“ALGON, Abia State, will always elevate public engagement, recognising the common saying that facts are sacred.”
