Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has debunked viral social media claims that he declared support for Peter Obi or said the South should produce Nigeria’s next president in 2027.
In a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, December 15, El-Rufai described the claims as “fake news designed to mislead the public.”
He stated categorically that he never made such remarks in any interview, speech, or publication. “I have not made any such comments anywhere — not in a speech, not in an interview, and not in any social media post,” he said.
The false claim, which circulated widely online, alleged that the former governor, now a leader in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had publicly endorsed Peter Obi and rejected Atiku Abubakar.
El-Rufai dismissed the story as entirely fabricated and cautioned against spreading unverified information.
“My views are shared only through my verified platforms. Any other sources should be disregarded,” he said.

He also called out those attributing articles and opinions written by others to him simply because he shared them on his social media pages.
“It is wrong to attribute opinion articles written by other people to me, even if I share those articles on my pages,” he added.
Criticising what he called “irresponsible politics and the misuse of social media,” El-Rufai urged journalists and the public to always verify claims before circulation.
“Society suffers when media professionals fail to check facts and instead support false stories circulating online,” he said.
He concluded by reminding Nigerians that only statements issued directly through his verified social media handles or interviews with credible media outlets should be regarded as authentic.
