Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to fight corruption, curb government waste and prevent election rigging if elected president in 2027.
Obi made the pledge during an Arise Television interview on Monday, September 7, 2026, while outlining his priorities for the country.
The former Anambra State governor said his administration would strengthen law and order, improve institutional accountability and allow political parties to operate independently.
He listed national unity, security, healthcare and education among his priorities, stressing the need to channel public resources into critical areas of development.
Obi’s comments followed criticism from his former running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who recently questioned the capacity of leading opposition figures, including Obi, to transform Nigeria.

Baba-Ahmed made the remarks during an appearance on the MicOn Podcast on Saturday, September 5. Obi responded by citing his record in Anambra as evidence of his capacity to govern.
His electoral pledge comes against the backdrop of the disputed 2023 presidential election, which Obi contested on the Labour Party platform.
Obi polled 6,101,533 votes to finish third behind Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, who won with 8,794,726 votes, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, who scored 6,984,520.
He challenged the result before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, alleging electoral irregularities. The tribunal dismissed the petition in September 2023, while the Supreme Court affirmed Tinubu’s victory in October.
Obi is contesting the 2027 election on the NDC platform with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate.
The presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027.
